The National Referral Facility for heart disease in Uganda
Established in 1988, the Uganda Heart Institute (UHI) is a super
specialized institution, providing comprehensive cardiovascular
services and is the sole National Referral Facility for heart diseases
in Uganda. Mandated by the Uganda Heart Institute Act of 2016,
UHI operates as an autonomous body governed by a dedicated
Board of 9 Directors led by Dr. James Magara and entrusted with
coordinating and enhancing the management of cardiovascular
diseases across the nation.

Services Offered:
• Outpatient Services:- Routine and emergency
consultations
• Inpatient Care Services:- General admission,
Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (Including Cardiac
Intensive Care and Coronary Care Unit)
• Diagnostic Services:- Resting ECG, stress
ECG, Echocardiography, Holter monitoring, Diag-
nostic catheterization, Cardia markers, CBC, Lipid
profile and many others.
• Cardiac Catheterization Services:- Emer-
gency and permanent pacemakers for established
heart blocks. Heart Attack (including PCI), routine
coronary artery disease treatment. The facility
also closes holes in the heart and repairs valves.
• Cardiovascular Surgery:- The surgery division
caters for both congenital and acquired heart
disease surgery. It provides both open and closed
heart surgery, thoracic(chest) and vascular (blood
vessel) surgery services; catering for both adults
and children.
• Support supervision:- We provide support
supervision to Regional Referral Hospitals
throughout the country.
• Nutrition and Health education
